TOP TIPS FOR PICKING THE RIGHT SPORTS CLUB
September 3rd, 2010Parenting seems to be more about ferrying kids from pillar to post than anything else these days – being a perennial taxi driver is all-encompassing! It’s a familiar scenario – our lives seem to be increasingly frenetic, our children do far more than we ever did and there never seems to be enough time in the day to fit it all in. In trying to bring up superkids, parents are having to be superhuman.
Modern children have timetables that are overflowing. And when it comes to juggling the commitments of more than one child, it’s often tempting to go with convenience over quality when it comes to choosing the kids’ various activities and sports –sometimes with less than ideal consequences.
How often have parents succumbed to a child’s insistence on doing a certain sport or extramural such as karate lessons, art, horse riding, ballet or judo?. When it comes to selecting the dance teacher, karate club etc, time-poor parents often just do a quick search on the internet or go with the flow with what the friends are doing without proper research. Convenience is important, but so too is quality.
We asked an expert for his suggestions on how to make the right choices when considering sports clubs or extramural lessons for our children. A karate Australia professional and owner of martial arts clubs in Perth, WA, Grant Rollinson had this to say:
1. Choose a centre that is established and has a track record. What people say they do and what they actually do is not always the same. Get information from the horse’s mouth – ask some of the club’s existing customers for feedback.
2. Make a carefully considered decision. Check their quality standards and their operating principles.
3. Make sure you can try it out before making a commitment. It’s not unusual to find people being conned into signing binding contracts that lock them in for months – sometimes even years. The customers’ interests should always come first – and a reputable club will be willing to do so.
4. Choose a club where adults are clearly playing a role as mentors and role models.
5. When it comes to choosing kids karate clubs, always look for a club which displays a high degree of respect, integrity, etiquette and modesty.
6. Make a choice based on thorough investigation. Doing extra activities is often not a cheap exercise and it should be a good investment..
7. It is often a good idea to look for a club that is represented in more than one town or city (even country), so that if you move or your life changes, you won’t have to start from the beginning in another location.
8. What are your first impressions?. When you first walked into the club, did you feel that it was hygienic, safe and welcoming?? Were you given satisfactory answers to any queries or questions ?
9. Look at any contract document carefully before making a commitment. Read the small print and be clear on your own obligations.
This advice does come from a martial arts professional but the principles apply to any activity or club – be it a ballet school, gym or fitness centre.
It’s not easy finding a harmonious balance between work, home and leisure time. So while it’s not the most vital life-changing decision, choosing the right sports club or activity for a child is a really important aspect in both a harmonious balance and their own progress and development. It’s important to make the right choice.
